| BYOP is always making new connections with schools and churches in the Boston-area. This is the part of the website where you can find out more about each of our chapters. Currently we have four chapters up and running. If you want more information on individual chapters, please call the BYOP office at 617-262-1895. |
John D. O’Bryant High School of Math and Science
John D. O’Bryant High School 55 Malcolm X Boulevard Roxbury, MA 02120 | Started: January 1st 2004 Councilor: In 2005, the O'Bryant chapter secured commitments for the creation of an art program at their school, and in 2006... it happened! In 2006, we worked to create the first student printing center in O'Bryant. Last year we conducted a survey of the student body to identify the students largest area of concern. The results were clear. We are now working to improve the quality of out school breakfast and lunch. So far in 2008, we formed made allies with The Food Project and the parents of the OB School Site Council, and we have met with the head of Food & Nutrition Services for BPS. We deserve--and will fight for it if necessary--school food that is healthy, appetizing, well prepared, tastes good, doesn't run out, has locally grown & fresh fruits and vegetables, and has menus approved by students. We want to know, WHAT'S COOKING!?!? |
Snowden International High School
More Muriel S. Snowden International School at Copley 150 Newbury Street Boston, MA 02116 | Started: March 1st 2006 Councilor: BYOP's Snowden Chapter was established after just one year of organizing in 2006-2007. In 2007 we surveyed the student body to determine what issue most needed changing. As a result, we began our first campaign, EAT 2 LEARN, to change the school schedule so that we can have enough time to eat lunch between 11am and 1pm. In 2008 our chapter determined that BYOP's Youth Way on the MBTA campaign should be Snowden's school campaign for the year, because Snowden's location in Boston's Back Bay combined with the school's high concentration of low-income youth made affordable T access especially vital for our student body. |
Cambridge City Chapter
Cambridge, MA 02138 | Started: January 1st 1999 Councilor: We won our 2005 campaign--entitled SAD (Supply and Degrossify)--for cleaner bathrooms in both of the Cambridge Ringe & Latin School's buildings. CRLS students met with Mr. Jim Maloney, Cambridge's Chief Operating Officer, and Dr. Knight, the school's principal, as well as conducted a school-wide meeting for all CRLS students. These meetings established a partnership between students and the Cambridge administrators for cleaner school bathrooms. The next year, we worked to ensure that commitments made about the bathrooms were honored. In 2007 we identified more issues with school facilities and launched a new campaign, entitled Control the Temperature. After presenting research on broken doors and unregulated temperatures in classrooms to the Cambridge School Committee, we won that campaign too. In 2008, we are working to increase student voice and feedback in the school. |
